Tree planting at Floriana garden
A National Arbor Day tree planting activity will be held by the International Tree Foundation (Malta), the Floriana local council and Din l-Art Helwa at the Garden of Rest, Msida Bastion, Floriana tomorrow at 10 a.m.
The foundation is donating the saplings.
Students from Floriana's two schools, the primary and the secondary schools, as well as the Floriana council will be taking part in the activity. A number of flowering Judas Neem trees as well as geraniums will be planted just outside the garden gate and in the garden itself.
The Golden Book of Trees will be available for those present to sign it.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the activity and visit the garden which offers a fine view of Pietà and Msida creeks.
The foundation will also be holding a two-and-a-half hour Woodland Walk on Saturday starting from Verdala Castle gate at 10 a.m.
Places to be visited during the walk include Buskett Gardens and the surrounding area where there are ancient cart ruts, Ghar il-Kbir (The Big Cave) and Punic tombs.
The walk will be conducted in English by the society's chairman Joseph Borg (tel. 7970 2757). Bus route 81 from Valletta to Dingli includes a bus stop in front of the castle gate. Participation is free.
A National Woodland Week is being held with the aim of raising awareness among the public of the importance of woodlands and their habitats.
