The Nationalist Party has congratulated Mahmoud Abbas on his election as President of the Palestinian Authority.

PN international secretary Jason Azzopardi said the party believed the democratic process that led to the election was concrete proof of the Palestinian people's commitment to create a Palestinian state that co-existed in peace and security with Israel.

Dr Azzopardi said the party believed the election of Mr Abbas should lead to an improvement in relationships between the Palestinians and Israel.
