998 thefts reported last month

A total of 998 thefts were reported to the police last month. They included 376 thefts from cars and 134 cases of pick pocketing followed by 89 burglaries from homes and 40 from bars or hotels.

There were 55 car thefts, 34 thefts from shops, 13 snatch and grab cases, 10 thefts from boats, four hold-ups, four thefts from factories, two thefts from boats and one theft from a beach. There were 236 "other" thefts" Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg told Gavin Gulia (MLP).

The minister said 63 theft cases were solved last month.

The minister also tabled a list of total crime reported last month. While the lion's share consisted of theft, there were five crimes "against morals/honour of family", nine cases of arson, 123 attempted offences, 85 cases of bodily harm, 283 cases of damage, seven drugs cases, eight cases of forgery, 16 cases of fraud, one homicide, five cases of illegal immigration, one case of perjury, five sexual offences, 12 threats of private violence and 15 cases of violence against public officers.
