Labour Party leader Alfred Sant said yesterday there may be matters over which the party and the media agreed or disagreed but it was important that everyone told the truth.
He said the MLP would contribute fully towards ensuring that truth prevailed.
He was addressing media representatives at the party headquarters in Hamrun during the annual reception to exchange New Year's greetings.
Dr Sant said that in the coming year the MLP would be seeking to safeguard the interests of the workers, as families were going through difficult times.
He acknowledged that these were times of change but change, he added, should be acceptable to all the sectors of society. Otherwise there would be serious problems.
"The Malta Labour Party will continue to say what it has to say even if it is not always understood. The party has its own agenda which it will continue to promote in the best interests of the country," he said.
The media would continue to project its views and he was convinced that there would sometimes be lack of agreement with the MLP while at other times their views would converge.
On its part the MLP would continue to give due respect to the work of each and every member of the media. He said the MLP and the media should understand each other and respect each other's views.
The party's general secretary, Jason Micallef, dwelt on the party's commitment to maintain the best possible relations with all the media in Malta.
