Lumen Christi Publications has just published the last in a series of three books in Maltese on the history of the Church's social teachings by Gozo Bishop Nikol Cauchi.

The book, entitled The Social Teachings Of Popes Pius XI And Pius XII, comprises 258 pages and completes a series started by Mgr Cauchi four years ago.

The two Popes served between 1922 and 1958, a period the author describes as a turbulent one in European history during which the international scene was dominated by three ideologies: fascism, nazism and communism.

The author argues that these ideologies created a number of problems for the Church but that the two Popes put up resolute resistance against such regimes.

"Pius XI and Pius XII ran the Church during the most critical of periods, they managed to strengthen both its workings and organisational structure," the author says. He adds that whoever is interested in the social teachings of the Church would definitely appreciate their contribution.
