Croatia's Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul, due to oversee the start of Zagreb's EU membership talks this year, resigned yesterday following corruption allegations against him that he has denied.

Mr Zuzul, a 49-year-old career diplomat and former ambassador to Washington, tendered his resignation in a letter to PM Ivo Sanader in which he again dismissed the accusations but acknowledged he could become a "burden for the government."

Mr Zuzul denied any wrongdoing and together with his wife filed private libel suits against local media which had published details of their alleged business dealings.
