It is Christmas night and in the silence of my room I cannot help thinking about all those suffering while we celebrate, and the inevitable question is: why?

It's a pity that I came to the conclusion that in the name of having a stronger economy we build structures that are lack the consideration of the human aspect. It doesn't matter if some people will suffer as long as the figures show that the systems of these structures are working and the economy is getting strong. That is how the world is functioning. I think it's a tragedy.

Please don't get me wrong - it's not about our government - in fact I think that Malta has not yet reached this extreme, but we have to be careful not to go there.

I consider us as a highly intelligent people. However what worries me is that we often look at what other countries are doing and try to copy a system or a structure without taking in consideration our size (in both land and population) and our culture. It's healthy to see what others are doing but unwise to copy their mistakes.

Designing systems for structures to improve the economy is something good in itself; however my appeal is to remind those who plan and implement that we will always be human beings and so the systems should be different from those made for machines. Man can think, tolerate, consider, create, love and understand - machines don't.

I take this opportunity to wish our country a bright future where tolerance, understanding, consideration and love will dominate over all kinds of suffering in its all forms. When someone needs help, give it; don't hide behind excuses of time or strict procedures. Remember that one day it might be you who needs help, because no one is immune from weakness, be it health or wealth.
