Regarding Captain Vella's letter ("Customer Affairs Column", The Sunday Times, December 26) about his difficulty in accessing the Eden Century complex, it is not enough for the Eden Leisure Group to emphasise that "we take his comments very seriously".

Since 2000 it is illegal in Malta to discriminate access to services on the basis on disability, and rather than complaining to the customer column of The Sunday Times, the correct line of action would have been to refer a complaint to the National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD), who can, should and do take action as empowered at law.

However I suspect that the NCPD already knows how accessible the Eden complex is!

When disadvantaged people start using their influence as a community to acquire their rights rather than awaiting "a helping hand", then society as a whole can move forward with dignity.
