Jane Axisa, head of Dom Mauro Inguanez Primary School in Senglea, and Emily Cremona, a teacher at the school, travelled to Frankfurt recently to learn more about the German educational system and culture as part of a Comenius project, "Intercultural Education".
They joined Cypriot and German counterparts for a week of activities at the Berkersheimer Primary School identifying similarities, differences and common problems between the German and Maltese school system.
The activities ranged from discussions on the schools' organisation to educational methods used, with the aim to develop the professional expertise of the involved teachers and broaden methodological know-how.
Presentations about Cyprus and Malta were also given by the teachers, familiarising German pupils with the other countries participating in the project. The children from all the schools involved are also being encouraged to stay in touch by e-mail.
It was also decided that each school will provide a number of traditional legends in English which will all be translated into the national language of each school. The pupils will draw scenes from the legends and they will be edited to form a book.
Participants in the project were treated to get-togethers and cultural visits to museums, a Christmas market, organised by the church and Berkersheimer school and a performance of the musical Cabaret by the English Theatre of Frankfurt.
