Securities brokerage officers and employees applaud during a ceremony marking the end of trading in 2004 at the Tokyo Stock Exchange yesterday. Tokyo's Nikkei share average gained 0.94 per cent in shortened trade on Thursday, with carmakers supported by a weaker yen, while banks extended recent gains as investors cheered progress in their handling of bad loans. The Nikkei ended the half-day session up 107.20 points at 11,488.76.
