The police have broken up a gang suspected of stealing confidential credit card information via special equipment affixed to ATMs.

The police said four Romanians - a 22-year-old-woman and three men aged 29, 35 and 42 - were arrested in connection with the case and are expected to be arraigned in the coming days.

The four were apprehended by the police as they were about to leave on a flight to Rome at Malta International Airport. The suspects had about Lm4,000 in their possession, the police said.

The arrests follow weeks of investigations by the police economic crimes squad.

The gang was allegedly using special equipment, including a digital camera installed on ATMs, to record Pin numbers and other information from credit cards being used by bank clients.

The police have seized the equipment used by the suspects.
