President Eddie Fenech Adami has expressed Malta's sympathy to the heads of state of the nine Asian countries suffering from the disaster of the earthquake and the tsunamis, which have claimed many thousands of victims.

In the messages of condolence, the President said he was confident that the spirit of perseverance of every head of state and the strong character of the nations affected by this tragic moment, together with the solidarity of the international community, will assist in overcoming the suffering wrought by this natural phenomenon.

The messages of condolences were sent to Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia; Iajuddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh; A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of India; Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, President of Malaysia; Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President of the Maldives; Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, President of Sri Lanka; Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), King of Thailand; Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, Federal President of Somalia and Gen. Thanshwe, Head of State, Union of Myanmar.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi sent similar messages of sympathy to his counterparts in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Indonesia and India.
