Call for stronger enforcement unit

Nature Trust Malta, the environmental NGO, called on the government to beef up the enforcement unit of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.

It said Mepa should also offer stronger support to its employees by coming down strongly on perpetual law breakers by means of heavy fines and by keeping in mind past breaches of the law when new applications are submitted.

NTM said that Mepa officers recently inspected a site at Dawret San Pawl, on which an enforcement order had been issued because of illegal works, and found the developer was carrying on with works despite the order.

The enforcement order had been issued in November after the developer removed legally protected olive trees from the site and undertook works without the necessary permits, the NGO said.
