Gozitan historian Rev. Dr Joseph Bezzina, head of Department of Church History, Patrology and Palaeochristian Archaeology in the Faculty of Theology, has just published a new book, Xewkija, the first village of Gozo. In 1678, Xewkija became the first Gozo locality to be elevated to the status of a village. However, the place had been inhabited since early times.
This is book No. 25 in the Gaulitana series of monographs on the history and heritage of the island from early history to recent times. This book, which carries a good number of fascinating photos and original plans, was launched at a special evening presided over by Mr Speaker, Anton Tabone, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, and the mayor of Xewkija, Dr Monica Vella. It can be obtained from leading bookshops and directly from Xewkija council.
