A contingent from the Malta Rock Climbing Club cleaned up two valleys in their contribution towards Clean Up The World.

This was a major operation in two of Malta's spectacular valleys - Wied Babu l/o Zurrieq and Ix-Xaqqa l/o Siggiewi. Large items such as old water heaters and furniture were collected.

Climbers are usually urged to wear helmets, especially at Ix-Xaqqa in order to protect themselves not from falling rock but from rubbish thrown over the cliff edge!

The morning was spent at Wied Babu, from where the climbers used their skills to hoist out the rubbish collected and subsequently filled a skip load. The afternoon saw the climbers collect two skip loads of rubbish out of Ix-Xaqqa.

The Malta Rock Climbing Club said they would like to thank the Cospicua Venture Unit for participating in the event, Ignatius Farrugia, the mayor of Zurrieq for providing a skip, rubbish bags and lunch and John Vella, the Siggiewi council secretary for providing two skips.

The club said it intends to work closely with the respective local councils throughout the year in order to keep Wied Babu and Ix-Xaqqa rubbish free.
