A public consultation on the development brief for the regeneration of Dock 1 at Cottonera is being launched by the Ministry for Urban Development and Roads together with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.
The main aim behind the re-development of the Cottonera waterfront is the transformation of the area into a major cultural, commercial and recreational area.
This new initiative will complete the Cottonera Waterfront project as it launches the last major available asset in the area.
An urban renaissance of the Dock No. 1 area will generate an increase in the standard of living and enhance the quality of life of the community, according to the Ministry for Urban Development and Roads.
The project is principally intended to provide a holistic approach to the Waterfront as one continuous system and to regenerate the Three Cities in a holistic strategy. The government is investing heavily in this area in a drive to spur cultural tourism diversity.
The price and demand for real estate in Vittoriosa in the past four years has increased considerably and Senglea and Cospicua are following this trend closely.
Once the draft document is reviewed following the public consultation and subsequent approval, the government intends to invite proposals from the private sector interested in undertaking this development.
The draft document may be viewed on the internet. Comments may be sent until January 10 to: The Director General, Malta Environment and Planning Authority, St Francis Ravelin, Floriana, or to Malcolm Borg, Ministry for Urban Development and Roads, House of Four Winds, Hastings Gardens, Valletta.
