A lay volunteer will leave Malta on Thursday for a year's missionary work in Makuyu Technical School in Kenya, a Salesian mission outpost.

He is Emanuel Cesare, 28, from Qormi. Last Friday week, he was given the missionary cross representing his mandate during Mass at St Sebastian parish church in Qormi organised by the Voluntiera Lajci Missjunarji society, responsible for preparing and sending volunteers to work in various missions.

Mass was celebrated by the vice-parish priest, Fr Joseph Cilia, who in his homily, praised the good upbringing of Maltese families whose sons and daughters do such good work in the community.

VLM prepares volunteers for such long-term missions; during the past 19 years it has sent more than 50 lay volunteers to Third World countries.
