The 44th rally of Catholic organisations in Gozo was held at the Catholic Action hall in Victoria last Sunday on the theme "The Eucharist: the apostolate's source and fulfilment".
Bishop Cauchi addressed the rally, over which he presided. Other speakers included Fr Eddie Zammit, Alfred Grech and Antonia Sciberras. Resolutions adopted at the rally will eventually be published with the approval of the Diocesan Commission for the Laity.
In his homily, Bishop Cauchi drew on the episode from St Luke's Gospel regarding the visit which Jesus paid to Martha and Mary, sisters of his friend Lazarus. One sister chose to reflect on the words of Jesus and obeying his instructons, while the other was busy with household chores.
He urged rally participants to reflect on whether action and contemplation were mutually exclusive. If not, they should see how they complemented each other in everyday life.
Bishop Cauchi quoted various saints to show that a good Christian should work hard at apostolate but also find time for prayer and contemplation.
This was especially true this year, which is dedicated to the Eucharist. Christ in the Eucharist is a fount of spiritual energy which should fuel our apostolate, Bishop Cauchi said.
