A new charity shop has opened at 9, Mensija Street, San Gwann, with a view to helping stray animals. Happy Paws, run by Tom Broome (tel: 2143-7122) and Maike Beekman (2138-9500), are offering excellent customer service and, as an animal lover, I appeal to fellow animal lovers to take their custom to and/or help Happy Paws.

They are selling second-hand books, clothes, games, shoes, bags, glasses, soft toys, ornaments, etc. at very low prices in very good condition. Happy Paws is a non-profit organisation. Among other projects, they are running a successful scheme, involving a growing number of supermarkets, whereby all animal lovers who have their own pets can help other animals. When they buy tinned food for their pets, they can buy an extra tin and leave it with the respective supermarket cashier. These are then picked up by Happy Paws.

Currently the following supermarkets are participating in the scheme:

Naxxar: Country Corner, Scotts, Greenwich Supermarket, Victory, Arnold's; San Gwann: Well Done, Savemart, Vegimania; Qormi: Shopwise; Tarxien: Finch, Corner Pet Shop, Macaw; Paola: Roots; Qawra: Trollees, Ci-Square; Mosta: M&A Mini Market; Swieqi: Il Mercato, The Flower House; and St Julian's: Tower Palace.

Happy Paws have delivered tins all around the island to the big sanctuaries and 'private' feeders. However, this is still a drop in the ocean. There are many stray colonies around Malta and feeding them all is a problem.

Funds raised by Happy Paws will be spent on various projects with stray animals' needs in mind. Neutering stray dogs and cats is the only solution to eventually get the population of strays to a manageable size. Your help is appreciated.
