McDonald's Malta will be supporting the Unesco Clean Up the World initiative being held today and tomorrow in Malta and Gozo.
As in previous years, management and employees in all eight McDonald's restaurants will be joining forces with their local communities, Brownies and Scouts to clean up specific areas in the vicinity of each McDonald's Restaurant.
John Correia, chief executive officer of McDonald's Malta, said preventing litter was ultimately an individual responsibility.
However, McDonald's restaurants have long played an active role in controlling litter. Staff training includes procedures for regular clean-ups in areas immediately surrounding the restaurant.
Last year, McDonald's Malta nominated Kevin Urry as the company's environmental coordinator.
One of the most recent developments which McDonald's Malta has introduced, is the recycling of its used cooking oil into bio-diesel fuel.
The fuel is used in the trucks that deliver products to McDonald's restaurants.
Other initiatives include phasing out of foam packaging with more environment friendly material. Another example is the reduction in the size and weight of napkins and the thickness of straws.
