Just a day after his official appointment as Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Joe Borg yesterday participated in the first meeting of the Union's Fisheries Council attended by the 25 EU ministers responsible for the fishing sector.

Dr Borg was representing the European Commission and also participated in a press conference following the meeting.

During the session, EU ministers discussed the new proposals on developing a new fisheries fund, the management of fisheries in the Baltic Sea and the negotiations for a bilateral agreement with Norway.

On Monday, Commissioner Borg and his team started working from the new Commission headquarters, known as the Belaymont building.

Dr Borg is being assisted by a team of 20 officers. The core team, called the Cabinet, is formed of seven staff members and is headed by Patrick Tabone, former personal assistant to Dr Borg at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The deputy Chef de Cabinet is Michael Kohler, a German EU official who used to work in the Commission's External Relations Directorate.

Dr Borg's team includes a number of other Maltese officials who used to work in his private secretariat in Malta. John Camilleri, former private secretary to (then Prime Minister) Eddie Fenech Adami, is Dr Borg's personal assistant.

Dr Borg's term as Commissioner ends in October 2009.
