Paul Hunter was the latest big name to be sent tumbling out of the UK Championship in York yesterday, beaten 9-8 by Ali Carter.
The world no.4's defeat means at least seven of the top eight players will fail to reach their designated quarter-final spot, with only Peter Ebdon still flying the flag for the game's leading stars.
The match was level at 4-4 overnight and world no.19 Carter never trailed when it resumed, leading 6-4 and 8-6 before being pegged back by Hunter to ensure what proved a dramatic final frame.
Carter was 56 points ahead before letting in Hunter, who looked set to clear up when he reached the colours. But the Leeds player missed a tricky brown and his opponent capitalised, booking a last-eight berth.
Borg beats Farhan 4-1
Malta champion Alex Borg chalked up his second successive Group H victory in the IBSF World Championship in Holland yesterday after beating Mirza Farhan, of Sweden, 4-1.
Today, Borg, who started with a 4-0 whitewash of Matthew Bolton on Sunday, plays against Finland's Markku Hamalainen.
Joe Grech is still to win a frame after two matches following another 4-0 defeat this time to Dutch player Stefan Mazrocis.
