The transfer of a number of stray cats from San Anton Gardens to Wied Incita was the subject of four parliamentary questions yesterday by Opposition agriculture spokesman Noel Farrugia. The cats were transferred by Environmental Landscapes Consortium (ELC).

Mr Farrugia asked Environment Minister George Pullicino whether the company had been authorised to transfer the cats, who issued such authorisation, what methods were used to catch the cats and transfer them and who was paying for their food at Wied Incita.

The minister said Environmental Landscapes had not requested authority to assume responsibility for stray cats and as soon as the Monitoring Unit learnt of their transfer an order was issued for this transfer to stop. The government had not directed any department to transfer the cats. The funds for their care at Wied Incita were being borne by Environment Landscapes with no compensation from the government.

Mr Pullicino sad ELC had bought and used carry cases to transfer the animals.
