Police seize over 8kg of cannabis resin

Two men held

More than eight kilogrammes of cannabis resin were seized by the police in a raid in Balzan in which two men were arrested in connection with the find, made on Saturday afternoon.

The discovery of the drug followed an operation by drug squad police in which they shadowed a 41-year-old man from Balzan.

The police said that at about 3.30 p.m. on Saturday, the drug squad police observed a 39-year-old man from St Paul's Bay place a large bag in the luggage boot of the car used by the Balzan man. The car was parked in a street in Balzan.

When the police pounced on the suspect they found that the bag contained over eight kilogrammes of cannabis resin. The two men were arrested.

Saturday's seizure was the second large drugs find this month - on November 4 customs and police officers seized 10 kilogrammes of cannabis resin which they found hidden in a car on board a catamaran arriving from Sicily.

34-year old Roberto Conte, a trader from Naples, and his girlfriend, Graziella Attard, 23, a law student from Fgura, have since been charged in connection with the drug find, thought to be one of the biggest in Malta.

In another police operation, on November 11, four women were arrested after having been found in possession of a number of packets of cocaine ready to be sold.

Duty Magistrate Joseph Cassar has appointed several court experts to assist him in the inquiry into Saturday's drug find.

Inspector Nezren Grixti, from the Drug Squad, is heading the investigations.
