GWU welcomes UHM's comments

The General Workers Union yesterday welcomed comments given by leaders of the Union Haddiema Maghqudin on Friday, saying that the UHM was now agreeing with its position.

The UHM said on Friday it was not prepared to cave in to measures which would dent workers' rights and conditions in return for a social pact.

The GWU said it expected the UHM to declare at the MCESD that like the GWU it disagreed with proposals made to the council, which meant burdens on the workers.

The GWU said the government and employers should abandon those proposals if they wanted a continuation of the talks.

The proposals included a cut in vacation leave and reduced overtime pay.
