Preparations are in an advanced stage for the annual chess competition at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture. The event, between December 11 and 16, will bring the curtains down on the main 2004 Malta chess calendar.

The contingent arriving from Moscow is likely to include senior European champion Radmila Popivoda (Elo-2,234). She won her title in Italy this year. The group also includes stalwarts Archangelsky, Loktiev and Gasparients.

The Russian chess competition has been annually organised in one form or another for the last 20 years. At some stage it was called The Ambassador's Cup. It now commemorates Alexander Alekhine, many times world champion, and former Malta no.1 Wilfred George Attard.

The competition is open to all but the organisers may limit the entry to 30 players using rating ranking as criteria for first preference.
