Euro round-up

It is interesting to note that in a survey regarding the euro (November 16), 72 per cent of Maltese respondents feared "abuses" and "cheating".

When in Valletta, my wife and I stop at one of the many cafés to enjoy a cup of coffee. The cost of a cup of Cappuccino is 45c, making a total of 90c. However, we have noticed that cruise liner passengers spending their euros are charged three euros for two cups of the same beverage. Taking an exchange rate of €1= Lm0.430 this is an increase of 39c, or 43 per cent. Is this "rounding up" something we can expect from shop owners on our joining the eurozone?

If so, it does not bode well, particularly for those on a limited income.
