Ten persons, including three children, were hospitalised for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a common area in a block of flats in Bertha Ilg Street, Ta' Giorni.

Civil protection personnel from the Floriana station were sent to the scene and using a table ladder, they hoisted people down from balconies.

Residents could not go down the stairs because mattresses and a motorcycle at ground floor level were on fire, causing a lot of smoke inside the building.

The district police are investigating.
