Opel's second mid-sized Astra model version, the estate, has just been launched in Malta, following the successful launch of the five-door.

With an elegant design, high driving dynamics and ample space for passengers and luggage, the new Astra stationwagon continues Opel's success story in the compact stationwagon segment.

Designed to turn heads, the bold styling of the new Astra's front grille combines with the car's broad, muscular stance to suggest an air of confidence, power and control.

A pronounced centre crease runs down the new Astra's hood, which portrays an expression of precision, dynamism and performance through design.

Driven by exacting standards of design and practicality, the interior of the new Astra is as comfortable as it is stylish.

Thanks to its 2,700 mm wheelbase, the new Astra stationwagon has plenty of legroom in the rear and a generous load volume area of up to 540 litres. By folding forward the rear seat cushions and seat backs, cargo capacity can be easily expanded to 1,590 l.

"Customers who want the sportier seating position of a passenger car, and prefer a more dynamic driving experience, will remain true to stationwagons even when offered modern compact van alternatives," Dr Uhland Burkart, executive director sales and service at Adam Opel, AG, said.

"Our Astra stationwagon addresses these customers, as it features customary Opel stationwagon qualities and agile handling, as well as the expressive design of the five-door model."

The Astra stationwagon is available with five petrol and four CDTI common rail diesel engines. The Astra stationwagon is powered by modern ECOTEC petrol and diesel engines with displacements between 1.4 and 2.0 litres and power outputs from 90 to 170 bhp with a maximum speed of up to 230 km/h and 0-100 km/h acceleration of 8.9 seconds.

The new Astra stationwagon is available in manual and Easytronic, which gives the driver the choice between manual and automatic gearshifts. All engines comply with the Euro 4 emissions standards.

The new Astra stationwagon is equipped with high all-round safety protection - the acclaimed Safetec safety system. After conducting crash tests, EuroNCAP awarded the five-door Astra the safest sedan in the compact (small family) car segment.

The Astra stationwagon comes equipped with an extremely rigid passenger cell that minimises mechanical deformation and preserves the maximum possible survival area under all accident conditions.

The Safetec safety system of the new Opel Astra stationwagon is based on the interaction of all standard safety features including driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS, seat belt lock tensioners, warning light for unused seat belts, side impact protection, side and rear disk brakes, child proof locks on rear doors and the pedal release system to avoid leg injury in case of a frontal collision.

The Astra stationwagon, on sale at the United Automobile showroom, Ta' Xbiex, comes equipped with a comprehensive standard equipment package including ABS, air-conditioner, central locking, CD player, front electric windows, six airbags and power steering. Over 50 optional extras are available for individual taste and preference.
