Children from single-parent families should have the same opportunities to move ahead in life as other children, Labour leader Alfred Sant said yesterday.
Single parents often had low wages and therefore the incidence of poverty in this sector of society was higher, he added.
Dr Sant was speaking during a seminar on "Poverty and Social Exclusion in Malta" organised by the MLP parliamentary group
The country, Dr Sant said, should not only fight poverty but more importantly the causes of poverty.
"The fight against poverty requires a strategy that puts priorities right, more so because of the limited sources in the country."
Poverty was experienced mostly by illiterate and unemployed young people, by pensioners and by single parent families, Dr Sant noted.
