The police will press charges in connection with the case of two Somali workers who were allegedly beaten up after they demanded their wages.

The police said action will be taken against two persons.

The Somalis, who spoke to The Times on Tuesday, filed a report with the police after one of them was hit on the head with construction scissors and both were punched.

The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions has deplored the treatment of the Somali workers saying that as a workers' representative it could not tolerate such behaviour which was reminiscent of slavery. It called on the authorities to take the necessary legal action.

The CMTU called on all employers to "show the respect and dignity befitting human beings".
