The role of the EU President

What is the role of the President of the European Union?
The new Constitution introduces the appointment of a President of the European Union. This new President's role includes the chair of EU summits, ensuring the preparation and continuity of the work of the European Council in cooperation with the President of the Commission, and on the basis of the work of the General Affairs Council; and endeavouring to facilitate cohesion and consensus within the European Council. He or she must also present a report to the European Parliament after each of the meetings of the European Council.
