Further to Norman Stivala's letter (October 25) regarding the three dead fountains in Qawra I must also add other fountains which are in the same deplorable state like the ones in Qawra.

I am referring to the two large fountains and several small fountains on the wall surrounding them and including lights and flower beds on the roundabout in Naxxar Road opposite Transfiguration Avenue, Lija.

These fountains, which are left idle without water and lights for a long time, were a most enjoyable and refreshing sight to delight the many who passed by every day. This area is also one of Malta's business centres, with modern showrooms, and these fountains are the second largest fountains, after the Tritons fountain.

Is it possible that the minister responsible for them is not interested in our environment?

He must have seen and admired the fountains functioning and kept in perfect working order all the year during his visits in other countries. Is it too much to emulate advanced countries with such nice attractions, which do not involve large outlays of money?

If there are any problems involving third parties as to why these fountains are not functioning the minister is there with all his powers to solve these problems without further delay. The minister should ensure that these fountains and lights are kept in good working order all year round and improve the environment to the satisfaction and enjoyment of all who pass by.
