Lm100 fine for probation failure

A 28-year-old man was yesterday fined Lm100 for breaching probation when he failed to abide by the regulations of the residential home where he was attending a drug rehabilitation programme.

In a judgment handed down on November 12, 2003, Nicholas Agius, of Mosta, had been given a two-year jail term suspended for four years and put on probation for four years after he admitted to burgling three hotels, three shops, and a cafe.

Among the probation conditions, he was to attend a drug rehabilitation programme.

On March 1, probation officer Carmen Borg filed an application in which she informed the court that Agius had breached a regulation at Santa Maria where he was attending a residential programme.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera noted that Agius had already been punished for the crimes he committed so she fined him Lm100 for breaching probation, as laid down by law.
