The General Workers' Union has called on companies wishing to tender for the provision of warden services to ensure that the salaries they offer are comparable with those of police constables.

Karmenu Vella, secretary of the union's services section, said two companies provided warden services but other companies appeared interested.

The call for tender for warden services for 28 local councils was issued recently.

Mr Vella said the work and duties of the wardens had risen considerably and were very similar to those of policemen. "The sacrifices and risks which local wardens went through in the past five years should now be recognised and reflected in their salaries," he said.

He said the GWU would be asking the successful companies to base the salaries of the wardens on those of police constables.
