"St Augustine of Hippo's Teaching Christianity" will be the theme of this year's St Augustine Lecture organised by the Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta.

The guest lecturer is Professor Pier Franco Beatrice of the University of Padua, Italy. The lecture is held in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Foundation for Theological Studies and the Augustinian Institute of Pietà.

The lecture was founded in 1992 by Rev. Dr Salvino Caruana, OSA, lecturer in Patristics at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Malta, and director of the Augustinian Institute. At the beginning of this year, the Maltese Augustinian Province published a Maltese translation of Augustine's De Doctrina Christiana.

Professor Beatrice will address the Philosophy Society of the University of Malta in a public lecture on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Erin Serracino Inglott Hall, University of Malta, on "Shifting Paradigms of Interpretation of De Doctrina Christiana".

On Friday at 11 a.m. Professor Beatrice give a public lecture on "What do we possess that we have not received? Why should Christians study profane history according to St Augustine of Hippo's De Doctrina Christiana?"

The lecture is open to all the members of the Faculty of Theology, University students and staff. It will be held in Gateway Hall C.

On Saturday at 10 a.m. Professor Beatrice will deliver a public lecture at the main hall of the Augustinian Institute, Pietà, on the patristic theme: "The Treasures of the Egyptians in De Doctrina Christiana".

This year's lecture is part of the international celebrations which the Augustinian Order is holding to mark the 1,650th anniversary of the birth of St Augustine.
