I refer to Annabelle Borg's letter on Maltese employed at the UN (November 2).

During my presentation to the Foreign and European Affairs Committee I stated that there is only one staff member at the UN from Malta. I based this statement on UN statistics as of June 2004. I also said that there are other Maltese at the UN but these are not on posts that are considered part of the Maltese quota.

As an examiner and chairman of NCE, I was very familiar with the UN exams. In fact, I pointed out to the committee that not enough posts subject to geographical representation are allocated to successful candidates of the UN exams, as was originally envisaged. This has obliged successful candidates to accept posts in UN peace missions and other activities.

I would like to reiterate that the information given to the committee was accurate and up-to-date.
