One Aids case, involving a foreigner, was reported this year, according to a list of infective diseases between January and September this year, tabled in parliament yesterday.

The list shows there was one case of acute flaccid paralysis; two cases of acute viral encephalitis, 412 cases of chickenpox, five cases of cryptosporidiosis, six of chlamydia, three erysipelas, 54 cases of food poisoning campylobacter, five cases of food poisoning ecoli, one case of food poisoning shigella, 39 cases of salmonella and 132 cases of unspecified food poisoning.

There were three cases of giardiasis, six of gonorrhea, six Hepatitis B, one Hepatitis C, and one herpes simplex.

Eight cases of HIV (including two foreigners), seven cases of Legionnaire's disease, all involving foreigners, four cases of leishmaniasis visceral and three cases of leptospirosis.

There were three cases of measels, 15 of meningitis (other bacterial) and five cases of mumps, eight cases of septicaemia meningococcal, 13 shingles herpes zoster and a case of syphillis.

There was one case of latent syphillis and another of scarlet fever, six cases of toxoplasmosis, five cases of non-pulminory tubercolosis (including four foreigners) seven cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, including three foreigners, seven cases of typhus murine, five cases of typhus tick-borne and three cases of whooping cough.

The minister said one person died of HIV, one as a result of Hepatitis C, one from leptospirosis and two from septicaemia meningococcal.

The minister was replying to a parliamentary question by Adrian Vassallo (MLP).
