I read with great interest your article regarding Melita Cable's new "digital family home entertainment" (October 24). I was especially excited by Mr Gasan's promise that each and every household in Malta will have digital family home entertainment!
I don't know about the rest of the "households", but I can tell Mr Gasan that my household will believe it when we see it! Forget digital TV - we'd be very happy just to get cable.
Melita Cable's sales and marketing manager proudly states that over 100,000 households have had cable TV installed since Melita's launch in 1992. Well, that's exactly how long our family has been trying to get cable TV installed in our household - my father gave up a couple of years ago.
I myself tried for a few months, but after sending off five or six letters all I got from Melita Cable was a brief letter from one of their customer care clerks. I was informed that apparently, the area we live in had too many technical problems and that solutions were still being sought. Yes, 12 years after their launch in Malta, Melita Cable still cannot provide me with cable TV, unless of course, that is why they decided to go digital. For their information, we have all the amenities, including ADSL, a service which, I am told, requires the same technology that, to date, has proved so elusive to Melita Cable.
The final insult is that, ever since they launched here, I have had cable in my previous residence - I even agreed to have one of their ghastly distribution boxes fixed to my front garden. None of this counts for Melita Cable, indeed, I could hardly get them to answer my letters. Their only communication was to keep sending me their monthly guide, presumably to make sure that I was fully aware of the service they refused to give me!
I am await with eager anticipation confirmation of Mr Gasan's public promise. I hope that in 12 years' time I will not still be without cable - of whatever kind... in the meantime I hold my breath waiting for the big technological breakthrough that will enable Melita Cable to finally provide me with a service of some kind...
