On October 3 I wrote, with reference to the Lm25 satellite dish tax: "Any payments made to cover the period beyond May 1, 2004, are paid in excess and must be refunded." Subsequently Minister Censu Galea informed me that this was not the case and I referred to the issue again on October 17.
To avoid any misunderstandings at this stage, while bearing in mind that what I wrote on October 17 is not applicable, I will just inform satellite dish owners that, last Wednesday, Minister Galea informed me that, after all, payments made to cover the period beyond May 1, 2004, would be refunded as explained above.
This means that our campaign has proved to be completely successful. We thank Minister Galea and his team for the positive conclusion of this campaign. We must now concentrate on our campaign to regulate the real estate sector.
On Thursday the government announced that the first batch of refunds, amounting to Lm125,000, will start being issued this week to those who had paid the Lm25 fee for the period after May 1.
As regards licences which expired before May 1, and for which satellite dish owners will be granted a pro rata refund totalling Lm180,000, workings are being calculatd and refunds will also be issued soon.
