Portugal will open an embassy in Malta early next year, Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Victor Martins Monteiro told Foreign Affairs Minister Michael Frendo during talks in Lisbon this week.
Dr Frendo said Malta would reciprocate with an embassy in Lisbon next year.
The two agreed to sign a bilateral agreement to combat drug trafficking, crime and terrorism as soon as possible.
During their hour-long meeting the two ministers discussed the need for general cooperation in the Mediterranean and the possibility of commercial joint ventures between Maltese and Portuguese companies to operate in the North African market.
Other issues raised were the Euromed process and the European Union's Mediterranean policy.
Dr Frendo was in Lisbon accompanying President Eddie Fenech Adami for the inauguration of the new Corinthia Alfa Hotel in the heart of Lisbon's commercial centre.
