The third Malta Junior Squash Festival was held recently at the Marsa Sports Club. Over 20 children, aged five to 11, took part.
The emphasis of the junior festival has always been 'children and motion'. This year was no different with the mini-squash programme being the backbone of the festival.
Mini-squash encourages learning and skill development in a fun, interactive way. This brand new scheme starts with generic ball awareness, movement and co-ordination and leads on to racket and ball skills.
The mini-squash programme covers every element of the initial stages of a child's long-term athletic development process and enables every child to maximise their full potential.
Participants were divided into groups for some co-ordination and agility games, apart from other activities.
National coach Paul Lake was assisted by Liz Said and members of the junior squad, some of whom had started playing at the first ever junior festival two years ago.
More than half of the beginners in the festival are now about to start regular junior coaching sessions on Sunday mornings at Marsa.
