Michele Peresso Group of Companies, operators of the Eurosport chain of shops in Malta and Gozo, for the second consecutive year, is sponsoring the Sports Journalism category in the annual Malta Journalism Awards.

Organised by the Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM), the awards are now in their 14th edition. Throughout the years, these awards are becoming more popular and attracting the interest not only of members of the media but also from a large number of sponsors who are providing financial support so that the standard of this annual event will improve from one year to the next.

During the presentation of the sponsorship, Michele Peresso Group of Companies director Michael Peresso Jr, expressed satisfaction that Eurosport is assisting this prestigious competition which aims to improve journalism in the country, in particular with regards to the field of sport.

Institute of Maltese Journalists chairman Malcolm J. Naudi said it was a natural choice for the leading local company in sports' equipment and sportswear to sponsor the sports journalism category in the Malta Journalism Awards, which comprise eight categories. He augured that the strong connection between Eurosport and the awards should continue in the years ahead to the benefit of both sides.

Apart from the Sports Journalism category, Michele Peresso Ltd is also offering vouchers to the winners of all eight categories in the Malta Journalism Awards.

Final preparations are currently in hand, and the winners will be announced during a ceremony on November 1.

Sole finalist in e-journalism

Malta's leading Internet portal, www.di-ve.com, has continued to consolidate its strong position in the provision of online breaking news, by being the sole finalist for this year's e-journalism award. All three finalists for this year's award are part of the di-ve news team.

Di-ve editorial team leader Paul Cachia said: "This is a very important achievement for us. Over the last years we have developed di-ve into the leading independent source of online news.

"The daily following from thousands of viewers living both in Malta and abroad is proof enough of our success, but being given recognition by the IGM is another important feather in our cap.

"Our innovative use of the Internet and mobile channels, offering breaking news in a true multimedia manner, have been very well received by our audience. This, together with our independence, has been key to our success," he said.

Maltanet, the Internet arm of the Maltacom Group, operates www.di-ve.com
