First African woman to be awarded Nobel Peace Prize

N.C.W. warmly congratulates the first African woman, Wangari Maathai, who has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to safeguard the environment and her fight against poverty in Kenya.

The Nobel Peace Prize Committee is reaching out to people who, in simple ways, in their everyday life, are dedicating so much time and energy to the cause of humanity, aware that peace means so much more than the avoidance of war.

Wangari Maathai's Peace Prize follows that of 2003 Peace Prize winner Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi for her work in defence of the rights of women and children
