Exhibition, book launch mark college anniversary

St Edward's College mounted an art exhibition by college students and Old Edwardians as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations. A book, St Edward's College: Memoirs Of The First Seventy-Five Years, was also launched.

Seventy-five paintings by different artists, all of whom have a direct relationship with St Edward's College, are on display.

The book tells the story of the college principally as seen through the eyes of those who were there at the time. The memoirs recall what school life was like, it describes the development of those elements that make the school, it delves into the main personalities - rectors, headmasters, teachers and support staff, and at the end of the book a roll of honour lists all those who left their mark while they were still at school.

The art exhibition was inaugurated by the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Francis Zammit Dimech who also launched the book. Dr Zammit Dimech said that following the symphonic concert which was held at the Manoel Theatre on October 12, he was pleased to inaugurate the exhibition and to launch the book.

"An anniversary is always worth celebrating but a diamond anniversary is an occasion of a life time. Colleges and schools are the cradle of education. St Edward's College has a chequered history of determination against all odds, of perseverance against tribulations and of courage to endure and survive. This college is an educational institution renowned for its excellence," the minister said.

Anthony Saliba, college headmaster, delivered a short speech prior to the inauguration of the exhibition. Following the minister's reply, Martin Scicluna, chairman of the board of governors and editor of the book, introduced its launching.

Dr Zammit Dimech presented 75th anniversary silver medals to nine members of the college staff who have served with the college for 25 years or more.
