The Union Haddiema Maghqudin said yesterday care workers at the home for the elderly in Mtarfa were joining in industrial action being taken by care workers at the St Vincent de Paul home for the elderly.

The UHM's health services section is putting pressure on the government to give care workers certain allowances and has ordered care workers at St Vincent de Paul not to assist nurses and nursing aides in washing residents.

At other homes, care workers were ordered not to work outside the premises. "Care workers in homes where there are no nurses can still wash the residents," John M. Briffa, UHM section secretary told The Times.

The union said there was no indication as to when the government would call it for talks so directives would continue in the weeks to come.
