A farm truck taking villagers to a bullfight in China's southwestern province on Yunnan veered off a mountain road, killing at least 23 people, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.

Four people were missing and three people died on their way to hospital after Tuesday's accident on a road above a valley on the Lancang River in Deqin county.

Nine people were injured, seven seriously. "Though prohibited by law, farming vehicles are often used as a transportation tool in underdeveloped rural areas," Xinhua said.

Police are investigating.
