A wreath-laying ceremony was yesterday held at Pembroke Cemetery in memory of 15 Maltese and two British RAF members who lost their lives 43 years ago when a Royal Air Force plane crashed in Libya.

The RAF Hastings crashed at El Adem Air Force base on October 10, 1961, only seconds after it left the runway. It was returning to Malta from an exercise mission.

The president of the Royal Engineers Malta Association, Raymond Cutajar, said the 15 Maltese and two British are remembered annually.

A Mass was said at the cemetery, followed by the wreath-laying that was attended by the Royal Marines Association (Malta Branch), the Royal Malta Artillery Association and a representative of Armed Forces of Malta Brigadier Carmel Vassallo.
