Joe Borg of Xghajra took Noel Farrugia to task for telling one and all that the spokesman for the government told half truths about the price of sugar soaring as we became members of the EU. Not only was Mr Farrugia right at the time but he has been proven right. The sugar prices did go up. The processors are getting it cheap because Mr Borg, Mrs Bugeja and every other citizen in Malta from one to 104 years of age is forking out some Lm52 as a subsidy for these to consume the very harmful glucose.
Mr Borg is rightfully worried about this. Yes, Mr Farrugia was correct in so far as the government spokesman kept silent about the subsidies, which now have to come out of our pockets. The price of sugar is very high but the government in its wisdom chose to help people run towards the diabetic scourge and subsidised at our expense the sugar for soft drinks, pastries and what have you.
The duty of informing the public about the bad effects of the Pure White and Deadly (sugar) does not fall into Mr Farrugia's ambit. Try the Minister of Health please. Cigarettes are deadly. Governments do not subsidise them. These are taxed right, left and centre. Smokers are precluded from pursuing their killing habit from all public places.
Now helping people to take more sugar at my cost, I being a diabetic to boot, is very bitter to swallow, however you try to sugar it, Mr Borg.
