A Maltese, Frans Borg, has been re-elected secretary general of the European Parents Association, which represents more than 100 million parents across Europe.

A former head of school, Mr Borg is the president of the local Association of School Councils (AKS).

His prestigious two-year appointment was made during the association's recent Annual General Meeting in Frankfurt as preparations were being made to celebrate the European Day of Parents and Schools today, one of the EPA's major projects.

The EPA seeks to promote the active participation of parents in education and to be the voice of parents in the elaboration of European decisions.

It lobbies for education policies at European level which will bring the highest possible quality of education for all children and works to support strong partnerships in education throughout Europe through the sharing of good practice and by promoting dialogue among the parents of Europe.

Eligible for full membership of the EPA are national organisations or associations of parents whose purpose is to work for improved home-school partnership.

Locally, Mr Borg is a strong proponent of parental participation in education, having been a founder member of the AKS.
